A controversial planning application by supermarket giant Tesco in Walkley has sparked local protest and has been slammed by Sheffield Lib Dem Leader Paul Scriven. Tesco have applied for planning permission for a convenience store at the junction of Springvale Rd and Commonside. However, local residents have mounted a campaign to stop the development and local councillor Paul Scriven has added his voice to the opposition.

Councillor Scriven commented:

"There all sorts of problems with this application and I have made a formal objection. The proposed store is to be located at a very difficult junction and the additional traffic generated will undoubtedly increase parking in the immediate area. Local residents do not need to have even more difficulty parking."

But the Tesco move also highlights a key Lib Dem policy. Councillor Scriven explained "one of the main Lib Dem policies is to support local small and medium sized businesses. The Tesco application is for an outlet next to the well established shopping and business centre on Commonside and Barber Rd. This centre comprises small scale local retailers. It is part of my Party's manifesto to assist these local businesses survive and prosper."

"Tesco's plans would inevitably undermine existing local businesses in the area. Sheffield Lib Dems oppose moves to kill off local businesses and we will resist Tesco's bid to operate at this location."
