Paul Scriven with Simon Hughes MP campaigning against the closure of the station footbridge
Paul Scriven: "I'm proud of the local Sheffielders who have fought this every step of the way."
Responding to the decision of the Sheffield City Centre, South and East Planning Board to refuse Listed Building Consent for East Midlands Trains in their attempt to install ticket barriers at Sheffield Station, on the grounds of not being in keeping with our Victorian station building, Councillor Paul Scriven, Liberal Democrat Prospective MP for Sheffield Central, said:
"This is great news for anyone who uses our footbridge to get to work, or to their homes, or to do business in the city centre.
"I'm proud of the local Sheffielders who have fought this every step of the way.
"This decision by the Planning Board adds to the long list of people who believe that closing the footbridge would be a disastrous mistake.
"It seems the only people who believe this closure is a good idea are East Midlands Trains. People are justifiably outraged at the idea that our footbridge - paid for with £15 million of taxpayers' money - could be shut off by a private company for the purposes of profit.
"As we've said all along, it shouldn't be rocket science to find a solution that stops fare dodgers without cutting our city in two. I urge East Midlands Trains to find a sensible solution that everyone is happy with - rather than just appealing this decision to the Government."
