Paul Scriven adresses campaigners
Paul Scriven, Liberal Democrat prospective MP for Sheffield Central and City Council leader, spoke out today against renewed plans for construction of ticket barriers at Sheffield Station..
Paul Scriven, who has long-campaigned against the plans, joined campaigners at Sheffield Station to add his voice, and Lib Dem support, to the protests.
In his speech to the rally, Paul Scriven said: "It beggars belief that despite the level of local feeling and the Council planning board rejecting the barriers last year, we're back again protesting against renewed efforts by East Midlands Trains to continue with their plan.
"It is unsurprising that EMT are pushing forward with their efforts to divide our city by closing off this major pedestrian route, but it is astonishing that this latest attempt has the backing of the Labour government.
"Local people have every right to feel let down that Labour ministers at the Department for Transport have been actively encouraging EMT to make this latest application. It makes it all the more important that, locally, we keep up the campaign against these plans and to urge to urge EMT and the DfT to change their minds and keep our bridge open."
