Paul Scriven launches petition against Tesco on Commonside with local residents in April 2009
A controversial move to build a new Tesco store at Commonside is set to come to a head after a date of 12th May 2010 was set for a public inquiry into Tesco's planning application appeal.
Paul Scriven, the Lib Dem prospective MP for Sheffield Central and local councillor, has been leading the campaign against the new Tesco alongside local people.
Paul said: "A new Tesco store in this location could be the death knell for the local shopping centre and bring traffic and parking misery for local residents. The message has to go out loud and clear to the Planning Inspectorate that local people are saying no to Tesco at Commonside."
Tesco has twice applied to build a supermarket on the site - in 2007 and again last year. Both times the Liberal Democrats joined local residents in campaigning vigorously against the plans, and on both occasions the council turned down the application.
Now the campaign faces a fresh test, as Tesco have appealed to the Government to overturn last year's decision. The final decision will be made by the National Planning Inspectorate at the inquiry. The Inquiry is scheduled to last for 2 days and will commence on Wednesday 12th May, 2010 at 10:00 am.
Paul added:
"We have already successfully put our case to planning boards twice. Now we will have to do it again to the Planning Inspectorate in May. I have already submitted my objection, as have countless local people - I hope that they will be listened to."
