Paul campaigns against the Digital Economy Bill
Paul Scriven, Liberal Democrat parliamentary candidate for Sheffield Central, added his voice to the campaign against the Digital Economy Bill.
Paul Scriven joined campaigners today from the Open Rights Group who are campaigning against the Digital Economy Bill. If passed into law the bill would allow disconnection, and web blocking for anyone suspected of even minor copyright infringement. This could spell the end of open wi-fi in Sheffield.
Speaking to campaigners at the event Paul Scriven said:
"The Digital Economy Bill is a dangerously illiberal piece of legislation. Under this bill wi-fi networks across Sheffield could be shut down if just one person using that network commits a relatively minor offence such as infringing copyright. This is a form of collective punishment that I and the Liberal Democrats oppose."
"At the Liberal Democrat Spring Conference this year I supported a unanimously adopted motion calling internet freedom front and centre, categorically rejecting web censorship and disconnection of infringes and their families"
"I am proud that the Liberal Democrats have reaffirmed our commitment to freedom and fairness, online and on the ground. Your web freedom is safe in our hands. We will continue to fight the illiberal and ignorant legislation from this Labour government."
