Paul Scriven has lived in Sheffield for over 13 years and has been a local councillor for ten years. In 2008 Liberal Democrats gained control of Sheffield City Council and Paul Scriven became City Council Leader. Paul has been a hard-working campaigner for local residents and has excelled as City Council Leader and standing up for Sheffield.
Paul Scriven has set out his priorities for the election, putting fairness and real change at the heart of my campaign. His five promises for local people are:
Fair taxes that will put £700 back in ordinary taxpayers' pockets
A fair start in life with an extra £30m for local schools in Sheffield to give every child the best start in life
A green economy with more green jobs including the electrification of the Sheffield to London line
Cleaning up politics by introducing the right to sack your MP
Fairness in higher education by abolishing Tuition Fees
The New Sheffield Central constituency contains the five wards of Broomhill, Central, Manor Castle, Nether Edge and Walkley. Paul Scriven has been a councillor in Broomhill since 2000.
The new constituency is a two-horse race between Labour and the Liberal Democrats. Notional results from 2005 place Liberal Democrats in second place with Conservatives and Greens trailing in third and fourth place. Betting odds have placed the Conservative Party's odds of winning Sheffield Central at 100-1.
The current MP Richard Caborn, who has been surrounded by scandal following allegations about his lobbying links, is standing down. His replacement will be no different. just another Labour Yes man The Labour Parliamentary candidate was Chair of the Sheffield Labour Party whilst Sheffield's Labour MPs supported the Iraq War, voted for tuition fees and civil liberty infringements and voted to keep their expenses secret. He did nothing to stop them or to get rid of them once they had let Sheffield down.
Paul Scriven today said:
"Having spoken to local people on their doorsteps, I know that people are hungry for real change."
"After thirteen years of Labour governments, it's clear that they have failed local people on the economy, on climate change, on civil liberties and even on tackling poverty. Yet a Conservative government won't change anything for the better. Everyone remembers the damage they did when they were last in power. It's up to the Liberal Democrats to deliver change and fairness."
"Just look at Sheffield where as City Council Leader, I've delivered the lowest ever council tax of 1.39% and have still managed to invest £4.5m for local people to spend on their priorities and £3.3m to help local people and businesses survive the recession. I also rejected a pay rise of £12,000 as City Council Leader."
"This is the change we've seen in Sheffield; now we need to bring this kind of change to Westminster."
