Paul Scriven, the Liberal Democrat parliamentary candidate for Sheffield Central and Leader of Sheffield City Council, has pledged to donate his wages to a local charity on the days he isn't dealing with Council business in the run-up to the General Election. The Cabinet will ensure that when Paul isn't at work the Council will continue to operate and local people's priorities will be fulfilled.

Paul has selected the Sheffield Children's Hospital, at the heart of Sheffield Central, as the charity to benefit.

Paul Scriven said:

"I have been working 12 hour days for some time now to fulfil my role as Council Leader, and Liberal Democrat candidate for Sheffield Central. However, now that we are into the campaign proper, I think it's only fair that on the working days that I don't carry out my full role as Council Leader then my wage for that day should go to charity."

"As I have been a local councillor for Broomhill for many years, where Sheffield Children's Hospital is located, I know firsthand what a great job they do. I can't think of a more deserving charity."

Paul already has a strong reputation for being careful with taxpayer's money. As Council Leader he rejected a £12 000 pay rise, voted to freeze councillors' pay and introduced a system for councillors' expenses to be published regularly online.

Paul added:

"At Westminster we have seen some appalling scandals, which have given the impression that politicians are only in politics to make a profit for themselves. People know that I put local people first and am not driven by what I get paid as an elected representative"
