Sheffield Lib Dems formally 'adopt' parliamentary candidates

April 10, 2010 2:22 PM

Nick Clegg MP and Paul Scriven celebrate the Lib Dem win in Sheffield in 2008Last night Sheffield Liberal Democrats formally adopted their two high profile Sheffield candidates that they hope will be representing local people as MPs in Westminster after the 6th May General election.

Paul Scriven has been adopted for Sheffield Central, a seat that has become a Labour-Lib Dem marginal due to boundary changes. It will be a close contest with the Liberal Democrats hoping to gain the seat from Labour.

Liberal Democrat Leader Nick Clegg MP was also adopted for Sheffield Hallam, a seat that the Liberal Democrats have held since 1997 and Nick has been an MP for since 2005.

The event was held at King Edwards VII School on Glossop Road in Broomhill. Both Nick and Paul addressed Liberal Democrat members from across Sheffield to get the local campaign off to a flying start.

Nick Clegg said:

"It was great to see the Sheffield Liberal Democrat family together and raring to go. Liberal Democrats are the only party offering a change for the better at this election and our message is going down well on the doorsteps."

"I believe that this election could see the best ever result for the Liberal Democrats in Sheffield, with the real prospect of gaining Sheffield a second Liberal Democrat MP in Paul Scriven. Paul would make an outstanding MP for Sheffield."

Paul Scriven said:

"People in Sheffield Central are fed up with 13 years of broken Labour promises and are up for a change. Our promises to deliver fairer taxes, clean up politics and give children a better start in life are striking a chord with local people. On May 6th local people will have a choice between another Labour 'yes man' as their MP or a Liberal Democrat committed to standing up for Sheffield."
