Paul Scriven visits Portland Works
Paul Scriven, Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Candidate for Sheffield Central, spoke out in outrage today as unemployment figures in South Yorkshire rose to 55 000.
The figures represent a doubling in unemployment since 2005.
Paul Scriven said:
"This is not just a shocking figure but a blow to many people and families in South Yorkshire who have been let down so badly by this Labour Government. This just goes to show that Labour's record on the economy is the same as the Tories - unemployment and missed opportunity. Young people, in particular, have been hardest hit and we need to make sure they get a step on to the jobs ladder urgently."
"The Liberal Democrats' plans to get the economy back on track would help those who are in greatest need. Just one example of this locally would be to start now on the electrification of the Sheffield to London railway line, which only the Liberal Democrats have costed and promised. Furthermore the Liberal Democrats have plans to reduce the waiting period - down from a year - for young people looking for help back into work. Our plans would guarantee that after 90 days of unemployment, young people would receive training, allowances and skills to ensure they are ready and equipped for the world of work."
"Gordon Brown has led us from boom to bust, bust and bust again with his handling of the economy and the Tories have proved to be no better. It's time for change and time to start putting people here in Sheffield back to work by giving them opportunities, hope and jobs."
