Paul Scriven has paid a heartfelt tribute to the 16,973 people who voted for the Liberal Democrats in Sheffield Central.
Paul Scriven said:
"I would like to thank each and every person who went out to vote Liberal Democrat in Sheffield Central on Thursday. That so many of you voted for change, and that we got within 165 votes of the Labour Party here in one of their Northern heartlands is a real tribute. I'm sorry that this time I couldn't quite bring about the change you wanted.
"But there is a new sense of optimism nationally now that the Liberal Democrats are finally able to put some of the policies you voted for into Government.
"I'm personally excited that a Sheffield MP - our leader, Nick Clegg - is now the Deputy Prime Minister of this great country. That can only be good for Sheffield.
"I will continue to work together with Nick and with the new Government to make sure that we achieve in Sheffield what we set out to campaign for all those months ago: Fairer taxes, a fair deal for young people, reforming our economy, and reforming politics.
"I'm excited that Liberal Democrats on the Council will now get the opportunity to work with Liberal Democrats in Government to achieve real change for Sheffield.
"Thank you once again for all your wonderful help and support. It has made a huge difference, and I will never forget it."
