Paul Calls for Sheffield Flooding Action Plan12.00.00am BST (GMT +0100) Tue 26th Jun 2007
Paul Scriven, Leader of the Sheffield Liberal Democrat Group on Sheffield City Council called for cross party talks to ensure the best possible deal for Sheffield after the recent floods in the city. Liberal Democrat councillors represent thousands of people across the city, some of which have been badly affected by the disaster. In a statement, Paul said: "Our thanks must go to all those involved in the rescue and clean-up operation to deal with this unprecedented situation. Many people within the emergency services, the local health service, the council and other bodies have been working tirelessly." "I am deeply sadden by the tragic news that two people lost their lives as a result of the floods yesterday. Our deep condolences go out to the families and friends of both individuals." "Many areas of Sheffield have been badly affected and our thoughts go out to everyone suffering during this time." "We will be seeking cross-party talks within the council to bring about a campaign to ensure Sheffield receives maximum financial support from the Government. We need support for the immediate clean-up costs." "However, Sheffield will also need long term investment to allow those businesses and individuals affected to get back on their feet. I have already contacted the leader of council to see if we can setup a cross-party working group to deal with these important issues for Sheffield." "We are also concerned that the events of last night showed places which historically have not flooded are now at risk. As a major city with many hills and valleys we could be susceptible if this type of freak weather increases as a result of climate change. We need an action plan from Government to deal with this new increased risk to Sheffield."
