Paul Scriven speaks at Sheffield Post Office Rally1.23.00am BST (GMT +0100) Mon 22nd Sep 2008
On Saturday people in Sheffield City Centre were joined by Paul Scriven the Leader of Sheffield City Council in the bid to save Sheffield's threatened Post Offices. The new Liberal Democrat administration in Sheffield, led by Paul Scriven, has been campaigning to save 16 Post Offices since closures were announced in early August. More than 20,000 signatures have been collected on the Council's website and in local campaigns. Protesters marched through the City Centre and held a rally outside the Town Hall, at which Paul was delighted to be able to speak. Paul said: "I'd like to thank all the people who have worked so hard to save their local Post Office. "This Government has closed 4,000 Post Offices since coming to power, with another 2,500 closures on the way. It's a national disgrace. "That's why I'm proud to be able to say that this Council stands four square behind the campaigns to save these 16 Post Offices. Paul explained how the Council was preparing plans to support Post Offices that face the axe, but stressed that Post Office bosses had the power to overrule the Council. "It's important to understand that the final decision will be the Government's," added Paul. Related Link:For more photos of the rally, visit our Photo Gallery.
