Paul Scriven supports local residents in new Tesco fight12.12.00am BST (GMT +0100) Sun 5th Apr 2009
Paul Scriven and local Lib Dem Councillors from Walkley, Broomhill and Crookes have launched their objections to a proposal for a new Tesco store affecting Crookesmoor and Walkley. The move comes just a year and a half since local residents and councillors defeated plans for a Tesco on exactly the same site. Tesco have submitted a planning application to build a new store at the junction of Springvale Road and Commonside, despite failing with the same proposal in Autumn 2007. Paul said "Local people can be forgiven if they feel a sense of déjà vu when they hear this news. No doubt they will be extremely concerned. However, I would like to assure them that local Lib Dem Councillors will be fighting against this proposal just as we did last time." Local Lib Dems are objecting on the same grounds as they did in 2007. That a new Tesco on that site would generate extra traffic on an already hazardous junction, create parking problems and noise for local residents and undermine existing local traders. Cllr Scriven added: "Clearly a new Tesco on this site would have a negative effect for local residents and it could spell the end for many local independent businesses, particularly in the present economic climate. However, we have defeated this application before and I'm sure that, with the help of local people, we can do it again."
