Sheffield Businesses have netted £470m thanks to a Liberal Democrat 'Buy Local' initiative. Last year 60% of the Council's spend was on suppliers with an S postcode, compared to just 46% in July 2008 when the policy began. Cllr Colin Ross, Liberal Democrat Cabinet Member for Employment, Enterprise and development said: "We know that some local businesses were hit hard by the recession, which is one of the reasons why we started the Buy Local Policy, to make sure that the council was doing all it could to support Sheffield Businesses and big employers based in the city." Thu 11th Mar 2010: Liberal Democrats launch Sheffield's 'Big Spring Clean'. Local Liberal Democrats on Sheffield City Council have launched Sheffield's 'Big Spring Clean'. Last year's event was a great success with over 2000 people from nearly 100 different groups and organisations joining with the Council to clean up their local neighbourhood. They cleared thousands of sacks of litter from local parks and green spaces. This year Lib Dems want the event to be even bigger and better. Mon 8th Mar 2010: Vote on 'Driving Me Crazy' hotspots. Sheffield's motorists can now vote on which congestion hotspots should be tackled by the Council thanks to the local Liberal Democrats 'Driving Me Crazy' scheme. Local people have nominated 27 suggestions which aim to stop Sheffield's road network driving them crazy. Sheffield has made the shortlist for the UK City of Culture 2013 title thanks to the Liberal Democrat Council putting forward a bid. The other three cities shortlisted are Birmingham, Derry and Norwich, meaning that Sheffield will fly the flag for North of England. Thu 4th Mar 2010: Sheffield Council Tax Increase down to 1.39% . The controlling Liberal Democrat Group on Sheffield City Council has announced that they will recommend increasing Council Tax, excluding precepts, by 1.39% at the Authorities budget setting meeting on Friday 5th March. This is lower than the previously planned 1.5%. What's more Lib Dems have also announced that they have found an extra one off investment of £280,000 to help deal with some of the after effects of the Winter weather such as potholes and increased litter. Lib Dem recession busting plan unveiled. The controlling Liberal Democrat Group on Sheffield City Council have unveiled how their planned budget for next year will invest £3.3m to help local people and businesses suffering thanks to the recession. Cllr Colin Ross, Liberal Democrat Cabinet Member for Employment, Enterprise and Development said "Liberal Democrats know that getting the local economy back on its feet and helping local families who have been affected by the recession should be a top priority. A recent Sheffield City Council survey has shown that, after less than two years in power, Liberal Democrats in Sheffield have shaken up the system for dealing with anti social behaviour in the city and local people are feeling safer. Wed 24th Feb 2010: Sheffield's 'Steel Women' set to receive ultimate honour. Liberal Democrat councillors on Sheffield City Council have proposed to honour the city's 'Women of Steel', the many women who worked in the steel industry during World War, by erecting a permanent monument in the City Centre. In a proposal to be voted on at next week's Council meeting, the majority Lib Dem Council Group have asked the Council to ensure a monument to the women's courage and hard work is placed in a prominent city centre location. Tue 23rd Feb 2010: Broomhill bookworms set for new bigger library. Local people around the Broomhill area are celebrating after the Liberal Democrats on Sheffield City Council confirmed they have found the investment needed to provide a new bigger library. Mon 15th Feb 2010: 'Full steam ahead' for barriers after shock Government backing. Liberal Democrats on Sheffield City Council have revealed that East Midland Trains (EMT) plan to re-apply for consent to install ticket barriers at Sheffield Station with the backing of Government. In a letter to Lib Dem Council Leader Paul Scriven, the Director of East Midland Trains, Tim Shoveller, outlined that the Department for Transport expect ticket barriers to be installed at Sheffield Station and EMT will be re-applying for listed building consent. Fri 12th Feb 2010: Lib Dem Leadership to reject recommended payrise. The Liberal Democrat Leader of Sheffield City Council and his Lib Dem Cabinet members have revealed they intend to reject an independent panel's proposal for senior councillors to receive significant pay rises. The independent panel's report, which is due to be considered at the 17th February 2010 meeting of Sheffield City Council's Cabinet, recommends a total of £66,212 a year extra for the Leader and the other nine members of the Cabinet team. Wed 10th Feb 2010: Lowest ever Council Tax increase on the cards with local Lib Dems. Liberal Democrats on Sheffield City Council have announced that they are on course to set the lowest council tax increase that Sheffield has ever seen. The planned 1.5% increase is well below inflation and would be the lowest increase on record for the second year running under the Lib Dems. In the past Sheffield had seen Council Tax increases as high as 10% with Labour in control of the Council. Mon 8th Feb 2010: Sheffield Labour Back Rent Bombshell. Liberal Democrats on Sheffield City Council have hit out at Sheffield's Labour Councillors, who voted against asking the Labour Government to reduce the proposed rent increase for council tenants in 2010/11. The increase is set to cost local tenants an average of more than £100 a year extra. Mon 1st Feb 2010: Lib Dems Top of the Class on Education. Next week's meeting of Sheffield City Council is set to welcome the news that education standards in Sheffield are being turned around by the Liberal Democrat administration. Reducing the gap between Sheffield and the national average on pupil exam results was a key pledge of the Lib Dems when they came to power in May 2008. 2009 saw Sheffield closing the gap with the biggest improvement in GCSE results ever. Fri 29th Jan 2010: Call to Safeguard Jobs After Labour Fudge Cadbury Takeover. A local Liberal Democrat councillor, who has the under threat Sheffield Cadbury Trebor Bassett factory in his ward, is set to take his call for the Government to stand up for local jobs to next weeks meeting of Sheffield City Council. Hillsborough Ward Liberal Democrat councillor Joe Taylor will propose that the Council writes to the Prime Minister and Business Secretary Lord Mandelson to demand that they safeguard the 700 local jobs at the factory in Owlerton, after the takeover of British firm Cadbury by the multinational food giant Kraft.
